Sophie's First Christmas

For Sophie's very first Christmas, we went up to Bemidji to visit Bryan's extended family. We stayed at Uncle Derek's house. On Christmas Eve, we had a delicious dinner at Bunny's house and celerated with the all of the uncles, aunts and cousins. On Christmas Day, we celebrated with the immediate family. On Boxing Day, the Ericksons came over. It was a fun-filled holiday!

Sophie meets Santa

Last weekend, Sophie met Santa and had some pictures taken. I don't think she realized that Santa was holding her and she took it all in stride.

Homemade baby food

Yum! So far, Sophie has tried rice cereal, avocado, applesauce and acorn squash. Avocado is simple, just smash it with a fork, applesauce is the same stuff that we eat (as long as it's "natural"), but acorn squash takes a little more work. I used kitchen tools that were banished away to the deep, dark unknowns of our cabinets for years. They were thankful to be out.

I went to Trader Joe's to pick up the acorn squash and I cooked it by steaming it until it was soft. It has the texture and color of melon, but with a sweet, nutty smell (that sounds odd).

Next, I used the Cuisinart food processor to puree the acorn squash, along with some milk. Side note: the Cuisinart is the world's loudest method of pureeing your food. Plus I just found out that it contains BPA, so I think that for the next round of baby food, I'm going to use the KidCo food mill.

I portioned out some to feed to Sophie for the next day and froze the rest in an ice cube tray for storage. The next morning, I put the little cubes of acorn squash in a Zip Lock bag, labeled it and looked at it proudly. For good measure, I also showed it to Bryan. Interestingly, the final product looks very similar to the original. Which is a good thing, since I'm feeding this to my baby.

So, less money to the giant baby food companies and the satisfaction of knowing exactly what goes into Sophie's baby food.

It's almost Christmas

Sophie checking out her new Jumperoo. It's her Christmas present, but we decided to put it together and give it to her early, instead of hauling it with us all over the state.
We're ready for game day! The Vikings won today, all thanks to Sophie's cheerleading.

Sophie met Santa Claus this weekend and had some pictures taken (this is just one I snapped with my camera). She was wearing her "I *heart* Santa" outfit.

Thanksgiving + more

Saw the web address to this blog on our Christmas card? Thanks for stopping by! Here are some pictures from the past few weeks.

Sitting on the pool table at Sarah's house, with Rick and Mary (all Mom's co-workers).

Nom-nomming on some rice cereal in her high chair. Sophie has also tried avocado and apple sauce.

Still loves taking her bath every night.

Her shirt reads, "I'm pooping right now".

On her shirt: "Baby's 1st Thanksgiving" with jars of turkey, sweet potatoes and green beans.

Sophie has been going to daycare for about 2 months and is doing well. We spent Thanksgiving at Grandma Linda's house and look forward to Sophie's first Christmas with the Hanson family.

New Pictures

Check out some of the pictures that Chris took of Sophie. Our little girl is growing up quickly. We celebrated Thanksgiving at Grandma Linda's house and ate lots of tasty food. Sophie has been eating rice cereal and enjoys it (for the most part).

Sophie's Birthday

Sophie was born on July 24, 2008 at 4:40am. She weighed 6 lbs 11 oz and was 20 inches at birth. She was born at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

The nurses did a great job showing Mom and Dad how to take care of Sophie. Here is Sophie having her first bath in the sink. In the beginning, Sophie wasn't a big fan of baths. But now that she is a bit older, it is her favorite time of the day. She smiles and babbles during her baths.

This was the picture of Sophie that we emailed out to family and friends. Sophie, like most babies, spent the first 24 hours of her life sleeping.

Here is our first family picture, taken at the hospital.

Before Sophie

This picture was taken two months before Sophie arrived. Mom gained 35 lbs during her pregnancy.

We had three baby shower and all of them were fantastic. The first one was a surprise shower thrown by Mom's co-workers. The next one was at Jennie's house and the last one was in Bemidji at Mary's house. We received lots of fabulous gifts that we use every single day. Thank you!

Here is a picture of Sophie's room before she arrived. You can see that Mom did a lot of arranging and rearranging during her spare time :)

October Update

What have we been up to lately? Here's a quick rundown. Last weekend, we went to Red Wing for Christie's wedding. We had the opportunity to take a five generation picture. Sophie, Dad, Grandma Linda Hanson, Great Grandpa Blaine Erickson and Great Great Grandma Marjorie Erickson. Wow! It was also Sophie's first stay at a hotel.

On Friday night, Stephanie, Kyrsten and Richard came over for dinner. We got to meet baby Ava for the first time. She is only three weeks old and has a full head of brown hair. Sophie and Ava are close in age, so they'll get to be playmates at family events.

Mom carved the pumpkin today and took a picture of Sophie next to the Jack-O-Lantern. She also put together Sophie's high chair and tried it out. Sophie seemed to like it and will get to start eating rice cereal soon.

Sophie Laughing

Dad was playing with Sophie today and made her laugh hysterically! The video is kind of dark and grainy, but she is giggling pretty loud in it.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! This morning, Mom, Dad, Grandma and Sophie went to baby story time at the library. We read a few books and sang songs together. After a nap at home, Mom and Sophie met Grandma at Sophie's daycare for a Halloween party. Our friends Eric, Denise and Evan let us borrow a pumpkin outfit for Sophie to wear.

Road Trip to Bemidji

Friday, September 12, 2008

Welcome!

Welcome to the first post on our blog. We plan to keep it updated with pictures, video and stories about our adventures as a family. Let's start with a bit of background...

Sophie was born at Methodist Hospital on July 24, 2008 at 4:40am. She weighed 6 lbs 11 oz and was 20 inches long at birth. Sophie is now 7 weeks old and will be starting daycare in about a month. We have been putting her on a consistent routine of eating, playing and nap time. She is nursing every three hours during the day and goes for about a 6-7 hour stretch at night. Our bedtime routine consists of a warm bath, changing into footed pajamas and feeding. A few weeks ago, Sophie started cooing and smiling. She is an absolute joy and we are very proud parents!

Bryan grew up in East Grand Forks and attended college at Bemidji State University, where he met Karen. They started dating in 2001 and got married on June 6, 2004 in Las Vegas. They moved from Grand Forks, where Karen attended graduate school at the University of North Dakota, to the Twin Cities in 2004. After a brief stint back in East Grand Forks in 2005, they moved back to the Twin Cities in 2006. Bryan works at Wells Fargo Financial as a loan officer and Karen works at Medica as a technical trainer. Together, they enjoy traveling, watching movies and hanging out with friends.

Stay tuned for more updates!
